I initially engaged in history of technology as part of my dissertation research, an important part of which involved investigation of early modern land survey techniques. I left that strictly "technological" focus for an extended period of time to work on a social technology designed to deal with micro-climatic variation and flood/landslide amelioration. My current work looks at changing Japanese approaches to flood/landslide amelioration from ca. 1800 to 2000, including technology transfers (domestic and colonial), links between pre-modern and modern sites of flood control works, etc. As noted above, I have begun to develop courses on the history of EA/Japanese science, technology and the environment.
